WattchIT provides you with answers to questions like 'how much does joey's room cost in electricity each month?' or 'How much does it cost to have the porch light on every night?
By understanding our cost or consumption, we hope that this will influence the way we consume electricity, one appliance at a time
Electricity prices will continue to rise at a faster rate than our income, so knowing what appliance can be turned off and at what time of day is critical to using less which in turn means you save more - less is really more
WattchIT was designed out of need. I had decided to convert my home to solar powered in the late 1980's when doing so was not yet 'sexy'. My roof was full of panels, by basement full of batteries and very few people could offer me any real help.
When I was done and feeling so proud, I sat looking at the meter on my converted, like a child looking in wonderment at a gift not yet opened, still in it's wrapping. I loved every second of seeing energy being converted by the suns rays, into something that I can consume without paying my electricity company a dime.
Then that night, with the batteries showing a full charge, I slept and this is the rest of the story.
When I woke, it was a bright sunny morning, the panels had yet to be touched by the beauty of the sun, I went to turn on my bathroom light and to my astonishment and disappointment, nothing happened.
I hurried to the basement to see if I've done something wrong or to look at the condition of the batteries, just to find out that they were empty!
I learned quickly about the cost of ghost appliances. Appliances that stay on even though they appear off. In particular, I had 4 large televisions in my home and they were the picture tube type, each consuming 400 watts an hour when off, because they had to remain on for quick start, so the tube remained energized constantly even though the screen appeared off.
So just with my televisions alone, on for 9 hours without using them, they drained my batteries. I became obsessed with understanding the real consumption of appliances and so developed WattchIT.
WattchIT provides a means to inventory your appliances in your home by room. You then estimate your usage per day by appliance in each room. You enter in your cost per kilowatt hour as provided by your electricity company or the bill they provide and your cost per month for your home, by room is revealed.
Once you reach this point, you can then adjust the time that your appliances are on in each room to meet your electricity consumption/cost goal. These are the steps you will follow:
Choose the type of home you have
Once you've defined the house in step 1, rooms are created with sample appliances, now you can edit the room content to reflect your real appliances. It's easy, just enter a room and record each electrical appliance in that room. Then estimate how much time a day you think that appliance is on - WattchIT does the rest.
For those who use Time Of Use, enter the schedule.
Enter your actual bills here each month, this will then provide you with metrics indicating the TOU % and can help you remain focused on driving your costs down especially for mid and on peak times.

(ARTICLESBASE.COM) When it comes to paying the electricity bill, one common complaint is that the bill is too much. I know, because it is a common complaint of my own too. I cannot stand having such high bills for my electricity. My coworker recently suggested that I check into the Iphone application "Wattchit".
They were telling that the application is saving a ton on money on their electric bill."Wattchit" offers a chance to keep track of the energy usage throughout the house. This not only benefits the environment, but it is just as beneficial on the pocket. I have already found that I am saving about $20.00 per month on average. I am not a technically savvy person, but using "Wattchit" offers me the chance to be able to make sure that I can use it without too much headache. I was absolutely amazed that they hold the world's largest database of electrical appliances. Their database on electrical devices holds well over 30,000 different electrical appliances in it. They also hold the world's largest database on tips for conserving energy.
Another thing that I really like about this program is that it does not stop the break down to the per room level. It breaks it down to what each appliance in the room is costing to operate. I have recently been using this program to help me decide what appliances I should spend the little bit extra upfront to get as an energy efficient appliance. For example, I have recently chosen to go out and purchase an energy star washer and dryer, because I do between four and six loads of laundry each week. This was really adding up very quick. I did not realize how much energy I was wasting when I was washing laundry. My new machines do not even use half of the power that was being consumed from the old machines.
Using "Wattchit" has offered me the chance to be able to save a lot more money than I was. I do not have to waste my paychecks, just to pay the electric bill, because of my family not realizing how much our energy waste was adding up to, we did not know how to change. We are now seeing with the "Wattchit" program that we could be saving a lot of money. We are slowly finding more and more ways to save with this program. I would suggest that anyone on a tight budget or anyone that is energy conscious consider getting this program. It has saved my family from having to waste our hard earned money paying for energy that we could have lived without. For me one of the best things to find out is that this program is also soon going to be available for Android and Blackberry devices.(Mostafa Hashem, Blogger, ArticlesBase)

Earth Day 2013: Five apps that'll help you protect and enjoy our amazing planet
WattchIT lets you analyze home electricity costs on a per room basis. Use the tips in the app to make changes in your electricity usage and save money. An excellent, but smaller companion to WattchIT is Stopwattch, which lets you set a timer to measure the energy usage of a single appliance or electronic device.
